LG eyes $100 billion smart car industry.As it unveils new smart car technology, LG is also jumping on the Open Automotive Alliance (OAA), joining automakers and tech companies Google, NVIDIA, General Motors, Hyundai and Honda.
Last week at Google I/O conference, where Android Auto was unveiled, LG showcased new audio, visual and navigation (AVN) solutions for Android connected cars.
The technology enables drivers to connect an Android device via a cable to vehicles with Google’s in-car interface platform to access their mobile navigation apps, contacts to make calls and send texts through the in-car display.
This smart car technology is expected to be available by 2015.
The OAA alliance is dedicated to developing smart car technology for the Android platform. Other new tech members include JVCKenwood, Pioneer, Parrot and Alpine. Most of the big auto names are also involved.
The news comes as Android Auto last week was unveiled at Google I/O 2014 where the Google interface transfers to your car’s screen, including Google Maps, Play Music, voice search, and Google Now.
The global connected car market expected to be worth US$100 billion by 2018, and sell almost 60 million units.
LG’s says its mobile devices and in-car infotainment capabilities will play a key role in the future of Android Auto.
“As a top technology company with a strong mobile business, LG has a great deal to contribute to the connected car space,” said Jong-rak Lim, vice president and head of In-vehicle Infotainment Development at LG’ Vehicle Components.
“LG will strive to strengthen its cooperation with OAA partners to bring connected vehicles to consumers sooner rather than later.”
The Korean giant is also a global leader in 4G LTE, the main connectivity solution for connected vehicles today and in the foreseeable future.
