The Garmin gadget company has unveiled two handheld devices said to be able to connect to mobile phones or e-mail addresses worldwide via Iridium satellite coverage.

The Garmin inReach SE+ and inReach Explorer+ both have built-in GPS for location tracking and basic navigation, while the inReach Explorer+ adds preloaded maps, compass, barometric altimeter and accelerometer, Garmin says

Using the worldwide Iridium coverage, both gadgets are said to be capable of sending and receiving text messages with any mobile phone number, e-mail address or another inReach device across the world. Both also have an interactive SOS function.

Both are now available in Australia. The inReach SE+ goes for a recommended A$599, and the Explorer+ is priced at $699.

Users will also need an active satellite subscription. Annual plans are said to range from $20 to $119 a month, while month-to-month plans range from $25 to $149.
