Microsoft has announced that its Vista operating system will be available to buy online as a download when it is released at the end of January.
The new operating system will be offered online in both the business and consumer versions.
Consumers will be able to purchase the OS from Windows Marketplace using digital locker technology. This heightens security and ensures downloads are resumed if interrupted. It also manages installation.
Not only will the full download be offered on Windows Marketplace, but consumers will also be able to upgrade an existing version of Vista at any time for a discounted price.
For example, upgrading from Home Basic to Home Premium will cost US$79.
There will also be a limited offer for anyone who has purchased one copy of Vista Ultimate. They will be able to license two extra copies of Home Premium online for US$49.99.
Prices for Vista online will be as follows (all prices are US dollars):
· Home Basic: $199 new or $99.95 as an upgrade
· Home Premium: $239 new or $159 as an upgrade
· Business: $299 new of $199 as an upgrade
· Ultimate: $399 new or $259 as an upgrade.
