For the first time ever, Google has outsold Amazon over its smart speakers with the Google Home range beating out the Echo range in worldwide shipments.
For Q1 2018, Google Home and Home Mini shipped 3.2 million devices with the Amazon only shipping 2.5 million Echo devices (Dot, Plus, Spot and 2nd Gen Echo).
According to Canalys, smart speakers continue to be the world’s fastest-growing consumer technology segment, with year-on-year growth in Q1 2018 of 210 per cent as shipments reached 9 million units.
Last year, for every quarter Amazon clearly outsold Google over its smart speaker devices.
Google had a sales growth of 483 per cent compared to the prior year with Q1 2017 growth at 19.3 per cent and this year’s Q1 at 36.2 per cent.
The US is still the largest market for smart speakers selling 4.1 million units with China following at 1.8 million units and Korea overtaking the UK with 730,000 shipments.
Google and Amazon are still dominating the smart speaker market with Alibaba’s Tmall Genie and Xiaomi following behind.
