Google who is already hurting Microsoft in the phone, browser and consumer markets is set to release its own Microsoft Office toolbar — dubbed “Google Cloud Connect” that will help consumer to migrate away from Microsoft office applictions to new enterprise offerings from Google.
The free plug in can be installed in Word, PowerPoint and Excel, is designed to give Office users an easy way to use the Google Docs online service to synchronise, store, back up and collaborate on documents from within the Microsoft programs.
According to Tech Flash the free plugin attempts to take a bite out of Microsoft’s SharePoint business and its new Office Web Apps. Microsoft offers similar collaboration features through those products, but the Redmond company has been calling on its customers to move to the Microsoft Office 2010 to get the full benefits of the functionality.
Google Cloud Connect results from the search giant’s acquisition of DocVerse, a US company founded by two Microsoft veterans, Shan Sinha and Alex DeNeui. Sinha, now a Google group product manager, says the technology recognizes that many people aren’t quite ready to move completely away from desktop software to fully web-based online document creation and editing.
I wonder how long it will be before the plug in starts crashing and Microsoft error messages appear reccomending that the plugin is disabled?
