Telephone numbers with new geographic prefixes are being issued to customers in a number of regions (NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania) throughout Australia as the supply of numbers in the affected areas has run out.

Acting General Manager of the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s Inputs to Industry Division, Maureen Cahill said, ‘Across Australia, the need for new telephone numbers is growing due to increased demand for additional phone lines and competition between new telecommunications service providers. If a number looks unfamiliar, telephone users should check whether the number is correct rather than just replacing the new prefix with the old one.’

The new numbers will only be issued to residents and business requesting new telephone services. No existing numbers are affected by the new numbers. Residents and businesses will not have to change their existing telephone numbers and the new prefixes do not change the cost of calls.

Some businesses using PABX and Commander systems may need to reprogram these systems to make calls to the new numbers. Businesses should check with a customer equipment programmer if they require additional information.

ACMA allocated these 11 new telephone prefixes to carriage service providers in 2007 and they are now being issued to consumers.

Geographic numbers are ten digit numbers starting with (02), (03), (07) or (08), which are used for local services. Geographic numbers contain information about where the service is located, including the state and region, and may provide additional information about the general locality of the number.

Additional information on the new numbers can be found on ACMA’s website at www.acma.gov.au/Newnumbers
