Minister for the Environment Peter Garrett has announced that households with foil insulations will be inspected following an audit that found that some homes had live electricity running through the ceiling.
According to reports, the foil insulation can make roofs live if it is wrongly installed. The checks that will be conducted by licensed electricians will cost about $200 per household, but will be paid for by the government.
To date, three installers have died after being electrocuted while installing the foil insulation.
There are currently 37,000 homes affected and will cost the government at least $7 million.
In a report found on The Australian website entitled Garrett bows to $50m check on homes installed with foil insulation written by Online Political Editor, Samantha Maiden, Garret said that the decision is the right move in order to provide certainty for households.
The Federal Opposition is now calling for the resignation of Peter Garrett.
