Sony’s PlayStation Network online gaming platform is set to officially end its 11 week hiatus that plagued PlayStation users after the service was hacked in April by fully restoring the network in Japan. Both the PlayStation Network (PSN) and the Qriocity music streaming service from Sony will be brought back in Japan, following Australia’s previous revival of the service last month.
Set for July 6, this will mark the end of the service’s global shut down that has seen users left without access since April after 77 million users’ personal account data was compromised.
Sony is just one company that has taken the brunt of a slew of recent cyber attacks from hacking groups like Anonymous and LulzSec.
The attack compromised user data as sensitive as credit card details, while other hacks have revealed sensitive government data, making online security a recent high priority for policy makers and organisations alike.
Australian PSN users who held accounts during the attack were able to download two free games from a small selection as part of a ‘Welcome Back’ initiative from Sony Corp, though the offer ended over the weekend.
