Tech2Home the Harvey Norman custom install operation is under investigation for potential compliance problems following the botched Federal Government insulation program.
The investigation is being conducted by the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency who are also investigating the alliances between Bunnings and Harvey Norman and insulation contractors.
The department’s main target is Spotless who were responsible for installing installations in over 10,000 homes in partnership with Bunnings.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald Harvey Norman’s partner Tech 2Home did installations for 3000 of the retail giant’s customers and was linked to a Queensland company, Thor Building Products, which carried out another 11,000 installations.
An official from the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency said Spotless and Thor were among the biggest installers and subcontractors were being investigated for potential compliance problems.
The SMH said that the involvement of major companies and well-known retail brands is at odds with the perception the insulation scheme was dominated by ”fly-by-night” installers.
The Harvey Norman chief executive, Gerry Harvey, said yesterday he had been assured the quality of installations for his customers was ”of the highest possible standard”.
A spokesman for Tech2Home, Glen Powys, said it installed high quality insulation in about 3000 homes for Harvey Norman. It contracted Thor to do installations for another 400 Harvey Norman customers.
In addition to the Harvey Norman-Tech2Home work, Thor said its network had installed insulation in 11,000 homes and had 7000 installations ”in the pipeline” when the government closed the scheme last month.
