Harvey Norman boss Gerry Harvey claims that he doesn’t have a problem with the Melbourne Storm and that the mass retailers will continue their sponsorship of the club following yesterday’s bombshell stripping of two premierships following the exposure of a $1.7 Million dollar salary cap rort.
Speaking in Sydney today Harvey said the retailers’ sponsorship of the club was not about to change and that what counts is the club going forward and the supports.
“At this stage we don’t have a problem. What you’ve got is a situation in Melbourne where three to five people were involved in something that was improper but the coach and players and fans know nothing about it.
“You’re really penalising everyone for the action of a few. I don’t see how that’s in the best interests of the sport or anyone.”
The biggest sponsor of NRL including the State of Origin series Harvey Norman has over the years tipped millions of vendor’s sponsorship dollars into NRL.
A major consumer electronics sponsor of one Sydney club told ChannelNews today “Salary cap rorting has been going on for years. How can one player finish with a club and end up with a $4M house on Collaroy Beach. This could be just the start for several clubs. The NRL has let loose a monster”.
