Almost 75 percent of people on a low income still consider their home telephone their most important service.A survey by the Australian Council of Social Service found many low-income earners rely on it for job hunting and social support.
The research was undertaken for ACOSS’s Low Income Measures Assessment team.
Telstra group MD David Quilty said 47 percent of those surveyed believed their phone service would have been disconnected had it not been for the Telstra bill assistance program. The program is estimated to assist more than 1 million low-income customers a month.
