The 34th HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edition) and the 18th electronicAsia kicked off yesterday, with a contingent of around 4,100 exhibitors in attendance at what is billed the “world’s largest electronics marketplace”.In all, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) states 24 countries and regions are participating in the event, with companies including HP, Motorola, lifestyle electronics brand Oregon Scientific, and corded, cordless phones and electronic learning toys supplier Vtech in attendance.
Over 130 buying missions consisting of more than 9,900 trade buyers from 68 countries and regions are set to visit the twin fairs.
With pro-democracy protests taking place nearby, the online edition of Hong Kong newspaper The Standard noted the event was unaffected, reporting the HKTDC as stating there have been no complaints or withdrawals by exhibitors.
Attendees have been advised to travel by the MTR or ferries, The Standard reported, with the frequency of shuttle buses linking the fair’s Expo Drive entrance and Causeway Bay, or to Hung Hom and Tsim Sha Tsui increasing.
This year’s event has placed additional focus on wearable technology and 3D printing, along with gadgets promoting good health.
Benjamin Chau, HKTDC deputy executive director, noted there “is an increasing demand for new creative solutions in these sectors of the electronics market”.
“Reflecting this trend, we have introduced two new product zones, 3D Printing and Wearable Electronics, and there is a dedicated showcase area to present the latest wearable gadgets,” Chau commented.
Among other products being featured are a number of wearable devices promoting personal well-being by monitoring the wearer’s activity, calorie burning and heart-rate levels, while smart healthcare products are also in focus, including new devices that monitor body weight and blood pressure and ease pain.
Other overarching product categories include smart home appliances, in-vehicle gadgets, audio visual products, electronic gaming and personal electronics.
Meanwhile, electronicAsia’s World of Display Technology zone will feature some of the latest visualisation technologies, such as an enhanced 3D video systems, enabling broadcasters to transmit a single video service to 2D and 3D audiences.
Concurrently, the 10th Asian Electronics Forum is being staged in Hong Kong for the second time (to be held on the 15th), featuring speakers from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, India, Japan and Taiwan.
