According to a number of reports, a buoyant and some would say feisty HTC says that it expects sales of its Touch Diamond smartphone to top two million units in 2008, and bringing a war with Apple just that one step closer.

If this prediction is to be believed, then that puts HTC squarely in the running to catch up to rival Apple and its iPhone, which according to most figures has sold something like 4.3 million units so far.
HTC launched the Touch Diamond four days ago in cooperation with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), the largest carrier in Taiwan. Later, HTC plans to launch the Touch Diamond in more than 30 countries, the company also noted.
The company says it began to develop the Touch Diamond in late 2006, and it took about 18 months to come out with the smartphone with a 3D touch interface design.
CHT will initially purchase about 20,000-30,000 Touch Diamond handsets, noting that it alone expected to sell a total of 200,000 HTC smartphones in 2008.
As for Apple, it seems the only winner in this smartphones war between it and HTC may well be the consumer, who will be spoilt for choice and technology.
