HTC executives who last night launched their new 5.9″ Max phablet smartphone at an event in Sydney have confirmed that their popular HTC One will be updated to Android 4.4 by the end of January.
The confirmation will see the HTC One go from Android 2.2 to Android 4.4 within a few months.
The new HTC One Max which goes on sale exclusively at Telstra on November 26 will also get the upgrade early in the new year.
The new Max has a quad-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor and “BoomSound” dual front speakers – and there’s a fingerprint scanner, like the one on Apple’s new iPhone 5s, to unlock the phone and launch favourite apps – a different finger can be used for each app.

HTC promised an Android update for its flagship device before the end of January, but delays in delivering Android 4.3 had some owners complaining.
That update will come in a two-part package, according to HTC. The first will be a small update to prepare the devices for Android 4.3. The second will be the full-on update, and that one is slated for December.
HTC will roll out Sense 5.5 and Android 4.4 to the Australian market by the end of January. Telstra are refusing to say when they will approve the upgrade.
