Pre-orders of the HTC Vive virtual reality headset, which commenced this week, are off to a flying start.Following the commencement of pre-orders, HTC’s Shen Ye revealed via Twitter that more than 15,000 units were sold in 10 minutes.
Shipping for the Vive, developed by HTC and Valve, begins April 5 – in Australia, it carries a price tag of US$899.
“Vive will be delivered as a complete kit, allowing users to instantly jump into a fully immersive virtual environment using two wireless controllers, 360-degree tracking and room-scale movement sensors,” HTC had advised via a blog post of its Vive consumer edition.
“The integration of SteamVR into the bundle ensures that all Vive equipment is kept up-to-date with the latest features.”
It is poised to be a big year for virtual reality, with a number of products set to hit the market.
Oculus Rift pre-orders commenced earlier in the year, with first shipments slated for March 28.
Sony’s PlayStation VR is also set for release in 2016, although Sony has yet to confirm an official date.
