Following its global unveiling in Paris early this year, Huawei has announced its new flagship smartphone, the P20 Pro, will land in Australia on May 18th for $1,099. With a ‘world-first’ LEICA-developed triple lens camera set-up, the P20 Pro is Huawei’s attempt to take on the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and Apple’s iPhone X.
The P20 Pro is available to purchase locally from retailers such as JB Hi-Fi and Mobileciti (in Twightlight & Black) and Harvey Norman.
As previously reported, Chinese-based Huawei has continued to reject allegations its products pose national security risks to Western governments. Commentators question what effect the news has had on Huawei’s brand, specifically its ability to compete in the premium smartphone market. Concerns have continued to mount since the ZTE saga.
The P20 Pro is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 970, and compliments 6GB of RAM, and a notable 4000mAh battery.
Similar to many other flagship smartphones, the P20’s camera is marketed as a hero feature – an 8MP sensor (telephoto lens), 20MP monochrome sensor and 40MP RGB sensor.
To the disappointment of some Australian consumers, the Chinese company is not bringing its other two P20 models in Australia – the ‘P20’ and ‘P20 Lite’.
In a bid to compete in the mid-tier market, Huawei is launching its Nova 2 Lite ($299) and Nova 3e ($399) in Australia.
The Nova 3e features an iPhone X-esque ‘notch’, with a 5.84″ FHD+ screen, 64GB memory and 4GB RAM.
The Nova 2 Lite has a 5.5-inch body, 32GB memory and 3GB RAM, with a 13MP and 2MP dual camera.
Both devices feature facial unlock and fingerprint recognition.
