
Huawei has unveiled its newest mobile phone processor, Kirin 970, which will likely be included in its upcoming flagship phone the Mate 10.
The new processor will include advanced artificial intelligence, inclusive of an octa-core chip built upon a 10nm manufacturing process with 5.5 billion transistors. The processor will enable AI on all future phones, courtesy of a NPA (neural processing unit) which Huawei CEO Richard Yu states can offer 25 times the performance, with 50 times the power efficiency of a quad-core Cortex-A73 cluster. This was found in the previous generation processor Kirin 960.
The new processor will, therefore, be similar to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 and Samsung’s Exynos 8895 chipsets.
Kirin 970 will also offer support for HDR 10 and 4K video recording at 60 fps (frames per second).
The new NPA is said to be the biggest drawcard of the new processor, which will offer faster and more efficient AI.
Mr Yun states of the industry-shaking innovation:
“The ultimate goal is to provide a significantly better user experience. The Kirin 970 is the first in a series of new advances that will bring powerful AI features to our devices and take them beyond the competition”.
Heralded the world’s third biggest smartphone manufacturer, Huawei have been creating its own mobile chipsets since 2009.
Sources state the Kirin 970 processor will be included in the upcoming Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, likely to be unveiled in Munich on October 16th. The flagship devices are rumoured to include a bezel-free design, longer battery life and a dual-camera.
As such, Huawei’s upcoming devices are likely to be positioned to rival Apple’s iPhone 8, Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and the Essential Phone.
