iiNet is investigating claims that the database of its subsidiary Westnet has been hacked, with customer details up for sale.The investigation is being carried out after a Twitter user with the handle of Cyber_War_News posted a screenshot to Twitter in which a hacker claims to have the Westnet database to sell or trade, stating that “there is a lot of valuable data inside”.
“seems westnet, one of aussies biggest ISP’s has been owned,” Cyber_War_News wrote in posting the screenshot.
Westnet, which is based out of Western Australia, has been a subsidiary of iiNet since 2008.
iiNet CIO Matthew Toohey has said in a statement that iiNet has taken the system offline, The Australian has reported, reporting that iiNet is contacting 30,827 Westnet customers as a precaution, recommending that they change their passwords.
The statement acknowledges that customer details, including contact details, may have been accessed.
“iiNet is aware of an incident that may have resulted in unauthorised access to old customer information stored on a legacy Westnet system,” The Australian reported Toohey as stating.
“Customer username, address, telephone and, in some cases, password information may have been accessed, however, no payment details were stored on the server. The system is now offline and at no further risk.”
