Intel has shut down its division of augmented reality glasses/goggles, ‘Recon’, used within sporting and industrial contexts.
Recon was acquired by Intel in 2015 for an undisclosed amount.
Reports state the division comprised around 100 employees and already experienced cuts to one-third of the unit’s workforce prior to the eventual close.
Sources state Intel intends to fulfil existing contracts for the goggles/glasses.
A spokesperson for Intel has declined to comment on the ‘Recon’ division specifically, though states that Intel will continue to work on tech to support AR and VR.
Heralded the world’s biggest chipmaker, in recent times Intel has endeavoured to expand its product offerings outside of personal computers.
