A networking company has said it will set up an Internet of Things (IoT) network across the Lake Macquarie local government area, pictured, in NSW, 150km north of Sydney.
The National Narrowband Network says this will create “a smart-city network equivalent to the size of 23 Sydney local government areas”, or around 650 sq. km.
The Federal Government appears to be taking an interest, with Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher – a former Optus executive – announcing that start-ups will be given free access to the network, while businesses who set up operations in the area will score a 15 percent discount on connection fees.
While not noted for heavy industry, unlike nearby Newcastle, the Lake Macquarie area includes a lot of water and the sizeable towns of Charlestown and Toronto.
