The iPhone has been good for Optus with the carrier adding 805,000 mobile customers in 12 months, an 11 percent increase and bringing its total mobile numbers to 8.2 million at September 30, parent company SingTel has revealed.
What is not revealed is how many customers left the Optus network.
The latest numbers include 223,000 new mobile and wireless broadband customers in the quarter to September, including 145,000 post-paid customers, SingTel said.
The number of 3G customers increased by 11 per cent to 3.08 million.
Customer take-up was driven by a range of smartphones including the iPhone 3GS, as well as family value packs and mobile content, SingTel said .
However Optus Mobile remains a minnow compared with some other SingTel mobile investments. Indian telco Bharti increased mobile customer numbers from 77 million to 110.5 million over the 12 months; while Indonesia’s Telkomsel went from 60.5 million to 79.8 million.
