iPhone owners may receive a delightful treat with the new iOS 5, with the update bringing text-to-speech functionality powered by Nuance.

Supporting their word with an iPhone screen shot, 9-5Mac claims the feature is simple and easy to use. Open up the messaging app and you’ll notice a new icon appears besides the space bar, distinguished by a microphone on it. When holding down the mic button, simply talk and the iPhone will jot your words down as message text.

Currently the software is still in beta testing, so the feature might change shape and form as Apple tinker with it.

The text-to-speech functionality is said to be compatible with the iPod and iPhone range, however it might not make the iPad until later this year.

Better yet, there’s been word that Apple intends on enhancing the voice experience with the next generation iPhone rumoured to sport fully integrated voice control. Coined ‘Assistant,’ the feature converts text to speech, identifies your location and then employs crowd sourcing to identify the best options. If you want something to eat, simply ask it and it will generate recommendations.

Apple has been busy at work tweaking its voice technology, but as always, the Cupertino based company is keeping tight lips.
