Australian broadband providers are delivering less than half of their quoted download speeds, according to research by Internet analyst Broadband Expert.Broadband Expert has collected data from 11,089 speed tests made over the last six months with a variety of ISPs, which they say make miserable reading for Internet users.
Broadband Expert data showed broadband speeds averaged only 3.5Mpbs, with some ISPs recording average speeds as low as 2.3Mpbs. The fastest provider was Optus, which clocked an average speed of 5.3Mpbs.
Researchers asked consumers what their ISP’s maximum advertised “up to” figure was and compared this to the actual speed on Broadband Expert’s speed test.
The test found the average download speed was just 48.89 per cent of the quoted “up to” speed.
