The key growth driver was Mobile PC’s with sales climbing to 135,000 units in June. This was worth, A$168 million to the economy.
This represented unit growth of 53% and 56% in value when compared to June 2008.
Netbooks with (screen size 10.3 inch and under) grew 14%, this was down on the 21% growth achieved at Xmas 2008.
The highest average price of mobile PC’s climbed to A$1,250.
IT peripherals also experienced strong growth according to GFK. Computer sales also increased with models used to store digital music, photos, and movies proving popular.
External Hard Disk Drives were a key category. Sales in July were up 50% in both units and value compared to the same period last year. An average price for a popular 1 terabyte model was A$177.
A GFK executive said “Overall, the IT market experienced a strong financial year-end and it will be interesting to see if these significant growth rates can be sustained until the next key sales period of Christmas”
GFK also said that for the past few years, Australian retailers have been embracing the 30th of June as the ‘End of Financial Year’ by running sales.
” IT categories continue to be a central feature of these promotions. The Australian Government offered an education tax rebate of up to A$750 for families with school age children, which gave an added bonus to sales this year. In 2009, these sales began in the last weeks of June and continued on into the first weeks of July”.
