EXCLUSIVE: JB Hi Fi is set to drop the sale of “direct import” Nikon digital cameras, with consumers now able to buy a genuine Nikon camera online at the same price as a grey imported camera. They will also get a 2 year Nikon warranty and a sealed box ensuring genuine parts.
Scott Browning, the Marketing Director of JB Hi Fi, said “This is a great deal. Credit must be given to Nikon who have come to the party with great pricing, a two year warranty program that will see us selling, as of today, genuine Nikon cameras backed by Nikon Australia. The Nikon cameras that we are now listing online are the same price, if not cheaper than a prior direct import Nikon model”.
Browning added “We have only achieved this through excellent dialogue with the vendor who recognised the situation we faced and have come back with a deal that is a win all round for the consumer, JB Hi Fi and Nikon”.
“Later today we will list the Nikon D7000 for $1,400 this is cheaper than what Kogan is currently selling the same product for and it is 100% backed by Nikon with the consumer getting up to a two year warranty”.
JB Hi Fi who will continue selling direct imported Canon cameras started selling direct import digital cameras in response to the grey importing of several digital camera brands by online retailers who were offering discount products without any guarantee that the goods came with genuine parts.
According to James Murray, General Manager of Sales and Marketing at Nikon Australia, the new program will eliminate several risks that consumers faced when buying a camera that has been supplied via an unknown “grey channel” supplier in Asia.
“Our investigations reveal that some cameras were being shipped with none genuine parts such as batteries and chargers. There is also the risk that it is not a genuine Nikon camera. Apple has the same problem in China where there is even an iPhone 5 on sale” he said.
He said “the new program which JB Hi Fi is initiating from today will result in consumers being sold a Nikon camera that we can guarantee is 100% Nikon. It will have Nikon batteries chargers and will come in a sealed box along with a two year warranty when they sign up to our new peace of mind program” he added.
18 months ago ChannelNews exclusively revealed that Companies like Drop Shipping and the Union Camera Company in Hong Kong were offering retailers in Australia branded digital cameras from the likes of Nikon, Canon, Sony and Panasonic at prices that were up to 50% cheaper than what retailers could buy the same camera for from vendors.
This resulted in several online stores selling cameras at prices significantly cheaper than what JB Hi Fi, Harvey Norman and the specialist camera channel were able to.
In October 2011, JB Hi Fi responded by selling direct imported cameras in an effort to match the pricing that online operators were offering.
“Credit must be given to Nikon for recognising the situation we faced and understanding the reason why we moved to sell grey imported cameras. They have not only come back to us with new pricing they have delivered an excellent package and warranty support for consumers”.
