Dr Karl is a scientist, broadcaster, and author of a new book called Dis Information. He’s one of Australia’s first, and most popular, Podcasters, and he told Ty Pendlebury he’s not afraid to look silly when it comes to gadgets.
GADGETS AT THEIR MOST SEDIMENTARY
My favourite gadgets would have to be a hard rock (hammer) and a soft rock (file). If you have a hammer you can weld – you can make anything with those two basic tools.
APPLE OF HIS EYE
I love my Apple computers, they’re elegant and they never crash. I did have an iPod till the kids knocked it off. They load it up with Gigs of stuff.
BEWARE THE PODPEOPLE!
The podcasts (of the weekly Triple J show with Mel in the Morning, and the five minute science segments) were the IT people’s idea. But my pod-casts are at number one and number three on Apple iTunes charts at the moment!
DR KARL MAKES HIS OWN GADGETS
I designed and manufactured a machine to pick up electrical signals from the human eye. It was used by Dr Fred Hollows, and at the time was the most advanced of its type in the world.
ON GETTING HITCHED
I’m heading up to the Arctic Circle, in Norway, to get married. It’ll be daytime for three weeks. But my seven year old couldn’t get that, she said: “The sun has to go down, Daddy. You’re speaking crazy again.”
FLYING THE FRIENDLY SKIES
My Bose noise-reduction headphones — I love them. Put them on and the noise goes away. I leave them on when I walk around the plane. I’m not worried about looking silly – I used to go sunbathing in a boilersuit to feel the warmth on my skin.
