Microsoft has trumped Apple’s iPad and iPhone in the consumer space with its Kinect device by becoming the ‘Fastest-Selling Consumer Electronics Device’ in the Guinness World Records. After Microsoft Corp yesterday announced sales of the device reaching over 10 million, Guinness World Records reported it as the quickest selling consumer electronics gadget so far.
Microsoft’s motion-detecting game controller for the Xbox 360 was first released on 4 November 2010, selling eight million units in the first 60 days (or 133,333 units a day).
In comparison, the iPad reached around two million sales in that same timeframe (though at a much higher price point).
The Kinect’s web-cam style of hands-free gaming controller goes up against the motion controls of the Nintendo Wii and the PlayStation Move.
Numbers announced by Sony before last year’s holiday shopping season put PlayStation Move sales at 4.1 million units in the first 60 day period.
The new sales record by Microsoft will be included in the next issue of the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition.
