Sony who are strapped for cash has decided to quit the development Field Emission Display which was a low cost successor to CRT TV.
It was only 12 months ago at CES 2008 that Sony was bragging about FED development which they said was set to be a true successor to CRT display technology.
The technology that was recently demonstrated running Gran Turismo 5 at 250fps was suppose to be available late in 2009 according to Sony executives. Now it appears that Sony cannot raise the capital for the acquisition of plant and equipment to manufacture FED screens.
It is expected that Sony will announce losses in excess of $3 Billion dollars. They have already announced the sacking of more than 10,000 employees worldwide.
Late last week Sony executives admitted that the FED development division was set to be shut down completly with all plant and equipment liquidated. Sony said that they have no plans to resume development at a later date.
No other manufacturers were considering FED development. Instead Sony is expected to ramp up OLED as their next big display technology.
