Samsung’s share of the LED-backlit TV market is set to shrink as new players enter the Australian maket according to new research. Samsung, who were one of the first vendors to launch LED technology which reduces the power consumption of a TV, is set to finish the year as the #1 TV vendor in Australia according to GFK.
It’s been reported that the LED TV market penetration will increase to 40% in 2011 from 20% in 2010 with several vendors inclufing OEM manufacturers like Epistar planning to ramp up capacity by 30% in 2011 after already raising its capacity by 30-40% in 2010, according to company president MJ Jou.
Jou pointed out that the upstream material shortage was the most serious in the third quarter, but due to seasonal impacts and material suppliers’ new capacity going online, tight supply should begin to ease in November and December.
With downstream LED TV customers adjusting inventory and in the process of transferring to newer models, Jou indicated that fourth quarter will be tough for LED backlight companies.
