LG Electronics has taken on Samsung and Oppo, by launching its first 5G smartphone in Australia – a dual screen handset available exclusively from Telstra for A$1,728.00.

The new LG ThinQ V50 5G with a ‘dual screen accessory’ will release in-store from June 11, and is available to purchase outright, or on a variety of Telstra plans (pricing below).

The launch comes as 5G coverage continues to roll-out in Australia, with the phone harnessing 4G/3G networks where 5G is unavailable.

The LG ThinQ V50 5G boasts optimised processing software and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 and Snapdragon X50 5G modem.

Despite 5G compatibility, the device measures 8.3 millimetres thick, and weighs 183 grams.

“After months of rigorous testing in partnership with Telstra, we are pleased to offer Australian consumers the first Dual Screen 5G Smartphone that offers the reliable communication needed to experience high-quality content at 5G speeds, which is progressively being rolled out in more and more locations,” asserts LG Australia General Manager Marketing, Angus Jones.

“5G is expected to completely transform the mobile landscape and we will continue to lead and bring this technology to Australians first,” adds Paul Milford, Networks Principal, Mobile Innovation Rollout, Telstra.

The smartphone accompanies a totally separate in-box accessory which clicks onto the V50 ThinQ smartphone for a multi-tasking dual screen experience.

The dual-screen attachment resembles a cover case, offering users a second 6.2-inch OLED display.

Customers can use the Dual Screen display and the LG V50 ThinQ 5G smartphone independently across several functions e.g. gaming, watching YouTube, emailing.

“The LG V50 ThinQ 5G is an exciting smartphone design, crafted to change the way consumers interact with their apps and one another,” remarks Mr Jones.

“From gamers live-streaming their friends and using social media to business users reading documents while video-conferencing, the Dual Screen option offers a streamlined approach to multi-tasking.”

The Dual screen can be used as a dedicated controller (e.g. for gaming), and runs off the phone’s battery (4,000mAh).

A new Vapor Chamber heat-dissipation system seeks to keep internal temperatures low, and support multi-tasking app usage.

With five cameras, the LG V50 ThinQ 5G incorporates Video Depth Control in both the front and rear camera to ensure in-focus moving objects.

Audio has also been boost to offer stereo performance, with or without headphones. The smartphone also supports Qualcomm® aptX™ and aptXHDaudio technology for premium Bluetooth audio quality and low latency.

LG’s popular Boombox Speaker has also made a return to the V50 ThinQ 5G, which uses the device’s resonance chamber as woofer to amplify bass.
