Choice has found that LG has been using an illegal device in two of its refrigerators in order to make them look energy efficient.According to the Sydney Morning Herald, two of LG’s fridges (L197NFS and P197WFS) were found to contain an illegal device that activates an energy-saving mode when it detects room conditions similar to those in a test laboratory.
“In reality the fridge, which has a 3.5 star energy rating, costs an extra $250 to run over 10 years and can severely affect food quality because the fridge can shut off when opened,” said the report by Melissa Singer.
Choice has reported this issue to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. This has been the third time LG had made false claims about its green products.
In 2004, LG claimed that some of its washing machines had 4A Ratings but was not certified by the Water Services Association. In 2006, it had to repay $3 million after the ACCC found that the company inflated the energy-efficiency star rating of some of its air conditioners.
