CES could witness fierce battle between Korean giants, as LG proliferate its 3D stockpile. Its recent announcement that it will invest around $4.3 billion in facilities next year only serves to set more fuel on the fire, although there is no confirmation yet as to whether it will make any major product launch at CES 2011.
“LG is still worrying about the lack of 3D-customised content, yet, the overall LCD industry will remain stable for the next year as our fellow overseas rivals are still maintaining a conservative stance regarding overly aggressive investments for various reasons.”
Earlier this year, LG admitted it was struggling to sell their 3D TVs, falling well behind Samsung, who earlier this year launched its Series 7 and Series 3D LEDs.
Although LG LCDs are among the top five selling screens in the world, it has neglected investment in 3D in recent years, but is now seeking to make up for lost time.
The Korean makers are also looking to even another score with Samsung – on the apps front – and are looking to build out their very own Application Store.
The debut of Sir David Attenborough’s new 3D film Flying Monsters 3D on Sky channel, LG’s content partner, on UK screens on Christmas Day could feed interest in the new technology for next year and beyond.
Attenborough is the father of colour television, who oversaw the first ever colour broadcast in 1967, while at the BBC will now steer this new format to mainstream shores with high anticipation from audiences and makers alike.
And for LG’s sake, let’s hope the ($4.3 billion) gamble pays off.
