Among all the big grunt sound systems and automation gear at this year’s CEDIA Show in Melbourne, it was a simple product that stole the show, a light speaker that contains an LED light and a compact wireless speaker.

Ironically, the device was one of the few products that doesn’t need a custom installer to make it work.
The LED light which has a 15 year life and the compact wireless speaker, fits into a standard recessed-light socket. A diffuser softens the light coming from the diodes, which are perforated with lots of tiny holes to let the sound out.
The Lightspeaker can also be fitted into floor and table lamps.
Built into the device is a 20-watt high-performance, low-distortion digital amplifier that delivers energy-efficient sound.
A 2.5-inch wide dispersion driver uses “digital signal processing to optimise high- and low-frequency output for a full spectrum of sound.”
Included in the kit is a transmitter which allows one to plug in multiple content sources such as an iPod or other input device. The transmitter uses 2.4Ghz wireless technology, that wirelessly sends the sound to up to eight Light Speakers.
Distributed by Amber Technology in Australia the Lightspeaker is ideal for both the home and commercial locations such as shops that play music or radio all day.
Users can also establish two separate listening zones. The transmitter or remote will control the sources, zones, lighting levels and volume.
According to Tina Morkert, who is out from the USA to launch the product in Australia, the LED bulb is rated for 40,000 hours of use and can last over 15 years. The light can also be dimmed using a supplied remote.
The only problem that I see whith this device is that a great deal of light fittings in Australia are bayonet fitting and not screw in types.
