Beloved of all-time great racing driver Fangio, the luxury sports car company Maserati is about to unveil a model certain to cause controversy among motoring enthusiasts.
Fiat Chrysler, which now owns the Maserati brand, is considering an electric version of the Italian motoring icon.
Maserati said it is envisaging a line-up of fully electric vehicles, including the Alfieri sport scar and a small city car, which would be the first electric model developed specifically for the region.
It is also expected to be sold in the US, though there is so far no word of an Australian launch.
The aim is to take on leading electric car maker Tesla, Maserati said. It follows similar plans by Volkswagen, Ford and several other car brands.
However, what the motoring purists will think of Maserati’s move from a deep throaty engine noise to electric silence is anyone’s guess.
