Microsoft and Dropbox have announced a partnership that will see integration of their respective services across both Dropbox and Microsoft Office via mobile devices and the web.Users will soon be able to access Dropbox directly from Office apps and edit Office files from the Dropbox app, Dropbox has advised.
While Microsoft already offers its own OneDrive service, the move comes with
Dropbox currently home to over 35 billion Office files.
New functionality will include the ability to edit Office files from the Dropbox mobile app and to sync changes across devices, with any edits automatically saving to Dropbox.
Users will be able to access Dropbox files from the Office app and to save new files to Dropbox, syncing docs without leaving the Office app, and will also be able to share Dropbox links from Office.
Dropbox has stated the new features will be rolling out to all Dropbox users on iOS and Android in the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has advised the functionality will first be included in the next updates to the Office apps for iOS and Android, coming in the next few weeks, with web integrations between the Dropbox website and Office Online to be available in the first half of 2015.
Dropbox is also set to make its application available on the Windows Phone and Windows tablet platforms in the coming months, Microsoft further advised.
