Microsoft is bidding farewell to the Consumer Electronics Show claiming mismatched timing doesn’t showcase the company’s product milestones.

Instead, Microsoft is taking a page from its rival’s book, Apple, by intending on hosting its own events. The Sun Herald reports Apple hasn’t attended a tradeshow since it pulled out of the Macworld conference in 2009.

Microsoft has long been a main attraction at previous CES shows, which attracted 150,000 people this year.

The 2012 CES show, held in Las Vegas on the 9th-12th of January, will be their last. In fact Microsoft’s CEO, Steve Ballmer, will be kicking the show off with a traditional commencement speech. He is expected to talk about Windows 8 developments, but the new OS won’t be ready until late 2012, influencing the number of products showing it off.

“They’re not cooked yet. So he’s going to be stuck trying to present a bunch of stuff that will be months away from being ready,” said Rob Enderle, a technology industry analyst.

A move Ballmer seems familiar with, only endorsing his claim that the show doesn’t accommodate Microsoft’s ‘milestone’ schedule.
