One of Microsoft’s latest “Patch Tuesday” updates from earlier this month is causing some PCs to crash and display the feared Blue Screen of Death, with Microsoft recommending the patch be uninstalled.
Patching any software in a live, production environment with updates often comes with the risk of breaking things that were working well before.
Similar issues have befallen Microsoft and other companies such as security software providers in the past, with Microsoft’s recent August updates the latest to fall victim to the problem, causing a Blue Screen Stop 0x50 error.
Microsoft issued an important update to its MS14-045 security bulletin, suggesting users uninstall the “2982791, 2970228, 2975719, and 297533” updates that came part of the recent Patch Tuesday updates.

The Company’s update states that “Customers who are experiencing difficulties restarting their systems after the installation of security update 2982791 should refer to the Known Issues section of Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 2982791.”
Explaining why the bulletin was revised on August 15, 2014, Microsoft vaguely states it is to “address known issues associated with installation of security update 2982791” and that the company is “investigating behavior associated with the installation of this update” while recommending “that customers uninstall this update”.
The company also advises it has “removed the download links to the 2982791 security update”.
