Microsoft’s first low-cost Windows 8.1 tablet, promised at its Build 2014 conference, has finally arrived for sale in Target stores nationally for $199.
Low-cost tablets have been the domain of Android over the past couple of years, with even sub $100 tablets appearing at the counter of major supermarkets, with none of the bells and whistles you expect from Samsung, LG, Sony and others.

Now comes a new breed of low-cost Windows 8.1 tablets, kicked off by budget tablet maker Pendo, known for its inexpensive Android-powered Pendo tablets.
The link Microsoft provides (here) shows a wide range of Windows tablets including the Pendo Pad.
Microsoft promises the Pendo Pad 8 “provides the great and easy-to-use Windows experience, in a compact tablet form”.

We’re yet to see who else produces a low-cost Windows 8.1 tablet and whether they can match or beat this price, but the tablet’s emergence does fulfil Microsoft’s promise of a $0 version of Windows 8.1 for the low-cost tablet market.
