Apple’s famous ads once compared Mac Vs PC, now it’s the underdog Microsoft showing how its Surface Pro 3 is the tablet/notebook hybrid the MacBook Air isn’t.
As Microsoft prepares to unleash the Surface Pro 3 in Australia on the 28th of August, three new anti-Mac ads have surfaced at Youtube.
The Surface Pro 3 will start at $979 for the entry-level model, rising through to $2000+ on a model with 512GB SSD and Core i7 processor, as we previously reported.

The latest ads are clever spots that deftly demonstrate the Surface Pro 3’s capabilities, features and benefits compared to what is arguably the most popular ultrabook on the market, the MacBook Air.
Indeed, even Microsoft is arguing with its ads that the MacBook Air is the ultrabook to beat, and not those from Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung, LG, Acer, Asus, HP, Dell and everyone else.
The first ad is entitled “Power“, showing how much more powerful the Surface Pro 3 is, the second is called “Head to Head” with a head to head feature comparison, while the third is called “Crowded“, showing how crowded your life is with a MacBook Air, iPad and notepad with paper, when the Surface Pro 3 has all those capabilities built-in as standard in the one device.

Who has the power?

In this last ad, Microsoft pokes fun at Apple’s iPhone 5S campaign entitled “You’re more powerful than you think”, by closing off its ad that shows a MacBook Air with iPad and notepad on it by sarcastically saying “You are more powerful than you think!”.
Naturally, the ads make the MacBook Air look clumsy and inflexible when put up against the Surface Pro 3, which has no touch screen, has no removable screen and has no stylus, with one ad stating “But it’s not just a tablet, it’s really a laptop”.
Microsoft’s Panos Panay, Corporate VP of the Surface division, explained in earlier statements promoting the Surface Pro 3 that “So many people carry both a laptop and a tablet but really want just one device that serves all purposes.
“Surface Pro 3 is the tablet that can replace your laptop-packing all the performance of a fully powered laptop into a thin, light and beautifully designed device”, he explained.
At the event introducing the Surface Pro 3 earlier this year, Mr Panay also demonstrated how the Surface was lighter than the 13-inch MacBook Air – even with the removable keyboard attached.
While he didn’t do the same demonstration against an 11.6-inch MacBook Air, which presumably would have won the weight wars, the Surface does have its larger 12-inch screen, stylus and touch that neither Air offers.

Mac vs PC all over again!

There’s also the issue of battery life, with Microsoft matching the 9 hour battery life of the 11.6-inch MacBook Air, but still falling short of the 12 hour battery life the 13-inch MacBook Air offers.
The MacBook Air has a full-size keyboard and the best touchpad in the business, putting all PC touchpads to serious shame.
While the Surface Pro 3 features a vastly improved keyboard and larger and better touchpad area than the previous Surface and Surface 2 models, we’re hoping Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 delivers a truly mind-blowing and even better keyboard and touchpad experience that outperforms Apple and everyone else.
Until then, there’s no question that the Surface Pro 3 is arguably the very best Windows PC ever made, and will definitely steal sales away not only from the MacBook Air, but competing Windows ultrabooks.
I just hope the future Surface Pro 4 can find room for two USB 3.0 ports, and not just one – an area the MacBook Air wins out over the Surface that Microsoft conveniently left out of its clever video ad comparisons.
Finally, Apple’s patent for the Siri interface on Mac OS X has clear references to a future Mac with touch screen interface, so we won’t be too surprised if a touch screen MacBook Air tablet/ultrabook hybrid finally surfaces in 2015, just in time to re-establish Apple’s supremacy and “flatten” the future Surface Pro 4 – but we’ll just have to wait and see!
