Microsoft’s Xbox company has announced new entries are coming to the ‘Doom’ and ‘Gears of War’ game franchises.
The gaming division for Microsoft has been struggling, with 1,900 staff being laid off in January, just three months after finalising the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Chief executive Phil Spencer sent out an internal memo that confirmed around 1,900 roles would be cut, amounting to around eight per cent of the gaming division, which had around 22,000 staff.
Other new reveals include a turn-based role-playing game, ‘Clair Obscur: Expedition 33,’ and a narrative sequel ‘Life is Strange: Double Exposure.’
New looks at Xbox-developed titles such as ‘Perfect Dark’ and ‘Avowed’ are also coming.
The Xbox Games Showcase is held every June by Microsoft, and arrived at a time when the company is still grasping its acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
After the layoffs in January, it’s still looking at shedding costs. Just last month, three subsidiaries were closed, including Tango Gameworks, which is the studio that created ‘Hi-Fi Rush’ last year.
Xbox has also faced rumours regarding its plans to release games on Sony’s PlayStation platform.
This started being taken seriously this year, with Microsoft revealing the next ‘Doom’ game will arrive on PlayStation 5, as well as Xbox and PC.
