Microsoft’s computing, gaming and hardware revenue rose 74 per cent in the 2015 first quarter on the back of strong Xbox and Surface sales.Microsoft announced total revenue for the quarter of US$23.2 billion, up from US$18.53 billion in last year’s corresponding period, while net income of US$4.54 billion was down from US$5.24 billion.
Overall devices and consumer revenue grew 47% to US$10.96 billion, with computing, gaming and hardware revenue boosted by the strong Xbox and Surface results.
Total Xbox console sales were 2.4 million, compared with 1.2 million consoles sold during the 2014 first quarter, with the Xbox One launching in 28 new markets.
Microsoft stated Surface Pro 3 momentum drove Surface revenue of US$908 million.
Surface revenue increased US$508 million, or 127 per cent, with an increased mix of Surface Pro units and related accessories sold.
With Microsoft having completed its acquistion of Nokia Devices and Services in the 2014 fourth quarter, phone hardware revenue totalled US$2.6 billion.
Microsoft advised 9.3 million Lumia phones and 42.9 million non-Lumia phones were sold during the three months ended September 30.
“We are innovating faster, engaging more deeply across the industry, and putting our customers at the centre of everything we do, all of which positions Microsoft for future growth,” Satya Nadella, Microsoft chief executive officer, commented upon release of the results.
