In a new report they said that by the end of the year, Android will be the world’s most popular smartphone operating system. But Windows Phone will gain ground starting in 2012 thanks to its deal with Nokia.
By even go as far as claiming that by 2015, Windows Phone will be the second largest platform worldwide, with nearly 20 percent of the market.
Google’s Android operating system is expected to run nearly half of the world’s smartphones by the end of 2012, as it overtakes Nokia’s Symbian. Nokia will transition from Symbian to the Microsoft operating system, under a deal to use Windows Phone as its “principal smartphone strategy,” opening up a large new market for Microsoft’s revamped mobile operating system.

Gartner says that the Nokia-Microsoft alliance won’t be as impressive as what Nokia achieved with Symbian:
Gartner has revised its forecast of Windows Phone’s market share upward, solely by virtue of Microsoft’s alliance with Nokia. Although this is an honorable performance it is considerably less than what Symbian had achieve in the past underlying the upward battle that Nokia has to face.
Smartphone sales worldwide will reach 468 million units in 2011, nearly a 60 percent increase from 2010, according to Gartner.
