Major insurance house MLC is planning to offer a smartwatch to selected customers which will check and report on their breathing control, heartbeat rates and sleeping hours.
Some 1500 people will be issued with the watches which are made by Intel and have a four-day battery life.
Customers chosen for the pilot will hopefully be relatively healthy and will earn points for good habits detected by the watch.
If their lifestyle and health appears to have improved over 90 to 160 days, they will be given two opportunities to take up a 5 or 10 per cent discount on their policy.
David Hackett, executive GM insurance at MLC, calls the experiment a potential game changer for the industry. He has already been wearing one of the watches and claims to have lost 5kg.
