Motorola’s Atrix which is the fastest Android Smartphone being sold in Australia is set to get an Android 2.3 upgrade which will put it in a position to compete head on with the HTC Sensation and the Samsung Galaxy S 2.
1,000 owners who subscribe to Motorola’s feedback service have been asked to try out a beta version of the Gingerbread software which when implemented on the Atrix will create problems for Samsung and HTC due to the speed of the Atrix and the inclusion of the Motorola Blur service.
The Atrix was released on the Telstra network ahead of the HTC Sensation with 2.2 out of the box.
Although Motorola showed Android 2.3 running on its phones at the CES show, it’s believed that development issues kept the OS from reaching their Atrix Smartphone till August, which is when the new version will be introduced. Telstra is believed to be working with Motorola to deliver an over the air upgrade.
Issues associated with Gingerbread on the Atrix Smartphone were identified by US carrier Verizon who stopped all Motorola Android 2.3 updates on its own network until several bugs were sorted out.
In the past Motorola has refused to discuss the Gingerbread upgrade with executives in Australia asking “What is wrong with our 2.2 Android offering?”
The scheduled update may be limited to 2.3.3 and would miss out on official video chat, although a 2.3.4 follow-up may arrive as soon as September.
