Mozilla’s smartphone operating system will be on mobiles from ealy-2013.
Mozilla’s smartphone operating system was called Gecko, but as the software enters the later stages of development, Mozilla has ditched the informal moniker for “Mozilla Firefox OS.”
Announced in July of 2011, the new OS will be based entirely on HTML5 and built according to open web standards.
Techradar reports smartphones running the new webcentric operating system will be launched first in Brazil on the Telefonica network in early 2013.
Speaking at the launch of Firefox OS, Mozilla CEO Gary Kovacs described the project as a continuously evolving platform reminiscent of the romance found in open-standard Linux.
“The introduction of the open mobile OS continues the Mozilla mission to promote openness, innovation and opportunity on the Web for users and developers. As billions of users are expected to come online for the first time in the coming years, it is important to deliver a compelling smartphone experience that anyone can use,” explained Kovacs.
“The large number of operators and manufacturers now supporting this effort will bring additional resources and diversity to our global offerings.”
