Curiouser is nothing if not a fun album.
Miller-Heidke has a whimsy about her music that makes it not only catchy but also amusing as well. The lyrics can, at times, be silly and at others be quite smart as well. There is no denying that she has a great voice and can hit some high notes as well as soulful tones too.
There is a Kylie Minogue quality to her songs with many working quite well as dance anthems but there also hints of Jem, Fiona Apple and Pink in them as well. The track “Can’t Shake It” even sounds a little like “Addicted to Bass” by Josh Abrahams and Ameil. Whatever her influences seem to be, the album is full of great songs that have a unique feel with a great deal of personality injected into each.
Not all songs are whimsical though. There are some quieter ballads as well and a good deal of pop female angst too. The combination works incredibly well, and there isn’t the obligatory tracks that you tend to skip. This is an album you can listen to from start to finish.
Kate Miller-Heidke is a breath of fresh air in charts dominated by American artists.
