Later this month the second release sites for the National Broadband Network will be rolled out, as announced today by the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephan Conroy.
The second release involves construction on nine sites, which according to Conroy will cover more than 50,000 premises.
The new sites will be based in different areas in Queensland, New South Wales and Canberra.
“This is exciting news and is further evidence the NBN is well and truly a reality that is rolling out quickly across Australia,” Senator Conroy said.
The upgrade will deliver high speed fibre optic cable technology capable of delivering broadband to “every home, business and institution that wants it.”
Conroy attributes the project’s momentum to the Definitive Agreement struck between Telstra, NBN Co and Silcar, paving the way for NBN Co’s preparation and construction for the next round on the Australian mainland.
“The announcement of these new sites demonstrates that momentum is building as the network is rolled out to every home, business, school and hospital in Australia.”
Between on-site work and the activation of the first services, the second release sites are estimated to take 12 months.
Negotiations for the 10 additional second release sites are still being undertaken between NBN Co and construction companies.
The second release rollout sites currently undergoing development include Armidale NSW, Kiama township & Jamberoo NSW, Riverstone NSW, Aspley QLD, Townsville QLD, Toowoomba Qld, Coffs Harbour, Gungahlin ACT and Goodna/Springfield Lakes.
