The first commercial services offered over the National Broadband Network will become available from today via NBN Co’s Interim Satellite Service, using Optus’s D-series satellites.

The service is designed for residents, small businesses and indigenous communities in rural and remote Australia who can’t currently access broadband services comparable to those available in metropolitan areas.

Four retail service providers are offering the satellite service. They are Bordernet, Clear Networks, Harbour IT and SkyMesh. A further two are to commence in mid-July – Activ8me (Australian Private Networks) and Reachnet.

Satellite equipment and installation will be provided by NBN Co at no cost to the customer.

The service aims to offer peak access speeds of 6Mbps down and 1Mbps up. It will be in a ramp-up phase until November when NBN Co says additional capacity, a wider range of plans and more service providers will be available.

NBN Co has contracted with Optus to use its satellites for the service at a cost of $200 million. Additional services will be provided by IPStar at a cost of $100 million.

Optus will fully manage the service for NBN Co, including provision of satellite capacity, network infrastructure, customer premise equipment and operating systems for interfacing with NBN Co and retail service providers.

In 2015, NBN Co plans to launch its own Ka-band satellites which will provide services at 12Mbps.
