Netflix has unveiled “The Binge Scale”, examining the global viewing of more than 100 TV series across more than 190 countries.Netflix states that the scale reveals “which shows we devour and which we savour”, finding that when members are focused on finishing a series, they watch a little over two hours a day to complete a season.
Netflix identified series viewed less than two hours per day as “savoured”, and series viewed more than two hours per day as “devoured”.
“As The Binge Scale indicates, the viewing experience of a series can range from the emotional to the thought-provoking,” Cindy Holland, Netflix vice president of original content, commented.
The Binge Scale reveals that series like Sense8, Orphan Black and The 100 are hard to pull away from, while among other series being binged on are those incorporating elements of horror and thrillers, including The Walking Dead, American Horror Story and The Fall.
Comedies with a dramatic bent, such Orange is the New Black, Nurse Jackie, and Grace and Frankie, are also being binged on.
Meanwhile, complex narratives, such as House of Cards and Bloodline, are more likely to be watched at an unhurried pace, along with dramas set in past eras, such as Peaky Blinders and Mad Men.
Comedies such as BoJack Horseman, Love and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are also being watched at an unhurried pace.
