According to sources in the UK Netflix is looking to produce content in Australia with the real possibility emerging that the US Company could use TV series content produced in Australia on their US and European networks.

Netflix who are tipped to launch in Australia early in 2015 currently produces Content is the new Black and House Of Cards. Both series have been highly successful for Netflix.

Sources in Europe told SmartHouse that “Australia has the production capability to produce TV series and there is a real possibility that a Netflix TV series could be produced locally”.

Fairfax Media is claiming that Foxtel’s internet streaming service Presto is believed to be very close to signing a deal with Kerry Stokes’ Seven West Media that would add content from the number one free-air-network to the $9.99 a month movies-on-demand offer.

Recently Foxtel launched  its BoxSets channel, a newly announce add-on for Foxtel customers to be able to stream TV content on demand, with a campaign replicating Sky’s On Demand service campaign in the UK with Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley the face of both campaigns.

The only problem is that pricing in the UK is significantly cheaper than Australia. A family Pack including BoxSets is only $54 a month.

In Australia the BoxSet add-on will set back consumers $10 a months and give them access to TV series such as Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, Big Love, The Newsroom, Rome, Band of Brothers, Entourage and Wentworth.

Ted Sarandos Netflix Chief Content Officer said in Europe last week that 70% of Netflix content is TV series and 30% movies.

Australia and New Zealand were “very attractive territories that are English speaking and love US content”. He was responding to a question from the interviewer Eric Scherere about expansion plans and specifically Australia and New Zealand.

His comment follows strong industry speculation that the service will launch simultaneously in both countries in the second quarter of next year.

Netflix has become famous for its innovative release system for series such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.

Recently Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings reaffirmed the company’s faith in its international expansion plans after northern summer launch in some western European areas.

“We’ve done numerous launches now starting in Canada four years ago, so we’re getting better and better at it,” he said.
